Gombe: Police arrest 7 health workers for diverting 5,450 mosquito nets

Seven employees of the Kwami and Billiri Local Government Primary Healthcare Departments in Gombe State are in police custody for diverting 5,450 mosquito nets meant for free distribution in their communities.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state government, with support from Global Fund, the Catholic Relief Services and the National Malaria Elimination Programme are sponsors of the free net distribution scheme.
The state health commissioner, Habu Dahiru, on Saturday said the suspects got arrested on September 10.
He said the nets were to reduce the threat of malaria in the state, especially amongst vulnerable groups – women and children.
Mr Dahiru said the nets were “unpatriotically and criminally diverted for personal aggrandisement by these persons.”
“The arrest of the suspects was made possible by personnel charged with the responsibility of keeping an eye on the process to ensure that the nets do not slip into wrong hands.
“They were tipped off by an informant that the nets were loaded in a truck in one of the markets in Gombe with the intent of diverting them.
“Following this development, the police were alerted immediately and the vehicle conveying the nets were impounded.
Marketers who were to take delivery of the nets were arrested and their co-conspirators were identified as well,” the commissioner said.
Mr Dahiru said 100 bales of the nets were recovered from Kwami, while nine bales were recovered from Billiri, adding that the nets would be distributed to the targeted persons in the two local government areas. Each bale contains 50 nets.
The commissioner warned against the sale of the nets, stressing that “these nets are for the poor and must get to them free of charge.
No one should pay for them.”
