Renowned gospel singer Ron Kenoly, known for his modern praise music in churches around the world, has died at 81.

His music director, Bruno Miranda, announced his death in an Instagram post on Monday, describing the late minister as a mentor, father figure and spiritual guide.

“This morning, February 3, 2026, we said goodbye to Dr Ron Kenoly,” Mr Miranda wrote, noting that he had worked closely with the worship leader for more than two decades.

He said Mr Kenoly deliberately avoided identifying as an entertainer, insisting instead that he was a worship leader called to guide people into God’s presence.

Mr Miranda explained that Mr Kenoly often taught that worship should be rooted in gratitude for what Christ had already done, rather than in anticipation of personal desires, and that a worship leader’s role extended far beyond the stage.

He added that the same humility, reverence and integrity Mr Kenoly displayed in ministry defined his private life.

Tributes from prominent gospel artistes have continued to pour in following the announcement.

Nigerian gospel singer Dunsin Oyekan shared a video of the late artiste singing along to his song “Forever.” He described Mr Kenoly as a “General” and called his passing “the end of an era.”

Gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey also paid tribute, thanking Mr Kenoly for inspiring generations of worship leaders.

“I grew up on these songs. And today, others are growing up on ours. Thank you, sir,” Bassey wrote.

Born in the United States, Mr Kenoly rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s through the Maranatha Music record label, where his live worship recordings gained international recognition.

In his 48 years of ministry, he was best known for enduring worship songs such as “Ancient of Days,” “Lift Him Up,” “Jesus Is Alive,” and “Hosanna,” many of which remain classics in churches decades after their release.

Beyond his music, Mr Kenoly was also a pastor, teacher and mentor. His influence extended far beyond the United States, particularly across Africa, where his songs and teachings helped shape generations of worship leaders and gospel ministers.

He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
