Governor Umaru Bago of Niger on Monday inaugurated the new office complex of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in the state.

During the inauguration in Minna, Mr Bago described the new office complex as a milestone for industrial growth and consumer protection in the state.

The governor, represented by Abubakar Usman, secretary to the state government, said the new edifice symbolised national progress and reflected the state’s commitment to quality and standards.

“This project speaks volumes about SON’s dedication to promoting standards and ensuring that Nigerian goods and services meet global expectations,” he said.

The governor noted that the new office complex was also in line with the state’s agenda, which emphasises innovation, productivity, and accountability.

Mr Bago added that the SON office would also support the state’s efforts in agro-processing, renewable energy, and small-scale manufacturing.

“Standards give value to innovation; they ensure that our local products meet international standards, enabling them to compete favourably anywhere in the world,” he said.

The governor expressed optimism that the office would benefit farmers, traders, entrepreneurs, and manufacturers by bringing SON’s certification services closer to them.

“This proximity will strengthen collaboration between SON and the state government to ensure consumer safety and boost investor confidence,” he said.

In her remarks, the governor’s wife, Fatima Bago, commended SON for achieving what she described as a remarkable milestone.

She said the project symbolised progress, commitment, and excellence, noting that SON’s role in upholding quality standards aligned with the state government’s development vision.

In his remarks, Ifeanyi Okeke, director-general of SON, said the newly constructed office would enhance the organisation’s operational capacity and service delivery in the state and the North-Central region.

Mr Okeke reiterated the SON’s commitment to standardisation as a key driver of industrial growth, consumer protection, and international trade.
