Gov Bago relaxes curfew amid tension over NSCDC’s alleged killing of miners
The Niger government relaxed the curfew Governor Umaru Bago imposed in Minna, effective Monday (today).
Mr Bago, in a statement by his spokesman, Bologi Ibrahim, disclosed this after a three-day prayer held for the 37 miners allegedly killed by Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps operatives while in custody on Thursday.
The governor appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and responsible citizens as the government continues to work to improve their well-being.
The governor imposed the curfew to avert further breakdown of law and order, after protests and chaos ensued in parts of the state capital, following the deaths of the miners.
The review of the curfew followed the parading at the NSCDC national headquarters in Sauka, Abuja, on Sunday, of the NSCDC commandant, Suberu Aniviye, and other officers linked to the deaths.
NSCDC operatives, during anti-illegal mining operations in the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas between Tuesday and Wednesday, arrested and detained 67 people. Thirty-seven of the alleged illegal miners died in custody.
