Gov. Mbah inaugurates three-man panel to probe Enugu community crisis

The Enugu State Government on Thursday inaugurated a three-man advisory panel of inquiry to investigate the crisis rocking Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community in Enugu South Council Area of the state.
The panel is chaired by the immediate past chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Enugu State branch, Venatus Odo, while Helen Onyia, is secretary, and Prof. Christian Obeagu will serve as a member.
The state government on Tuesday suspended the traditional ruler of the community, HRH Igwe Christopher Nyia, over his alleged involvement in the lingering crisis.
Inaugurating the panel at the ministry of chieftainvy affairs in Enugu, the state Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr Charles Egumgbe, said the committee was constituted with the approval of Governor Peter Mbah to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the crisis.
Mr Egumgbe said the panel was expected to determine the immediate and remote causes of the crisis, examine the role played by the suspended traditional ruler and any other persons connected with the breakdown of law and order.
According to him, they are also to identify other individuals or groups involved, and recommend measures to restore lasting peace in the community.
He stressed that the assignment was not a political exercise but an advisory inquiry aimed at uncovering the truth and restoring normalcy.
“The government is not interested in witch-hunting anybody. What is important is that the panel conducts its assignment with fairness, transparency and in line with the principles of fair hearing,” he said.
The commissioner warned members of the panel against compromising their integrity, warning that any attempt by individuals or groups to influence the outcome of the investigation would not be tolerated.
He assured the committee of the ministry’s full support to enable it carry out its assignment effectively.
Mr Egumgbe directed the panel to complete its investigation and submit its report within two weeks from the date of the inauguration.
Responding on behalf of the panel, Mr Odo thanked the state government for the confidence reposed in the members.
Mr Odo assured that the panel would discharge its mandate diligently, objectively and without fear or favour.
“We appreciate the privilege to serve the state in this capacity. By the grace of God, we will carry out this responsibility professionally and get to the root of the issues to enthrone peace in the community,” Mr Odo said.
