Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo has promised full support for the family of the late Government House Correspondent of Independent Television and Radio, Kingsley Uchegbu.

Mr Uchegbu died on Wednesday after a brief illness.

Speaking on behalf of the governor at the deceased’s residence in Benin on Thursday, the information commissioner, Kassim Afegbua, said the Edo government would stand by the family.

Mr Afegbua said the government would provide full support and necessary assistance to help the family cope with the loss of their breadwinner. He assured the wife of the deceased, Chineyeamara Uchegbu, that the state government would not abandon the family.

“Madam, we are here on behalf of the governor, and we assure you that we will not leave you alone. We will be part of the process that will bring succour to you and your children,” he said.

Mr Afegbua described the late Uchegbu as dedicated, committed, humble, and simple in character, adding that no one could speak ill of him. He urged the widow to remain strong for her children.

“The distance he covered daily to work showed his dedication and resilience,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the family, a church elder at Winners Chapel, Magnus Oshiogwe, expressed appreciation to the government for the prompt condolence visit, describing it as a mark of honour and respect for the deceased.

Mr Oshiogwe noted that Uchegbu was an active member of the church and that pastors had visited the family immediately after the news of his death broke.

Similarly, the Nigeria Union of Journalists in the state described Mr Uchegbu’s death as a monumental loss to ITV/Radio, the journalism profession, and the union.

In a condolence message jointly signed by the state chairman, Festus Alenkhe, and secretary, Andy Egbon, the union said it received the news with “profound shock, deep sorrow, and heavy hearts”.

The council noted that Uchegbu was not only a committed staff member of ITV/Radio but also an active and visible member of the NUJ in the state, known for his humility, passion for journalism, and friendly disposition.

“At moments like this, words are inadequate to express the grief and sadness in our hearts,” the statement said.

The deceased is survived by his wife, children, and aged mother.
