Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reversing the negative trend in the state’s malnutrition data.

At the Noma Day celebration in Sokoto on Saturday, Mr Aliyu, represented by his deputy, Idris Gobir, revealed that a substantial percentage of the state’s 2024 health budget had been allocated to address the trend.

“Upon assuming office, the present administration found alarming malnutrition statistics in Sokoto State, positioning it among the states with the most severe cases in the country.

“Therefore, I want to assure the public that intensive efforts are underway to transform this situation,” he said. 

The governor expressed confidence that the next released data would reflect positive changes in the state.

Mr Aliyu commended the Sultan of Sokoto and healthcare staff across the state for their continuous support in addressing noma disease and malnutrition.

He emphasised the government’s commitment while pledging to implement necessary measures to combat malnutrition, particularly among children.

Mr Aliyu extended his appreciation to Medecins Sans Frontieres and other development partners for their unwavering support of the state in this crucial initiative.

John Canty, the project manager of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), identified a high malnutrition rate as a significant factor contributing to noma infections in society.

Mr Canty clarified that noma was an infectious disease caused by malnutrition and poor oral hygiene, emphasising its non-contagious nature.

He highlighted the urgency of timely intervention, adding that patients can succumb within a few weeks if not attended to.

The project manager said that specialised care for Noma is currently available in designated hospitals across Nigeria.
