Governor Aliyu seeks more support for families of fallen heroes

Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State has solicited more support and consideration for the proper upkeep of fallen heroes’ families.
During the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration on Monday in Sokoto, Mr Aliyu reiterated that his administration will continue to support retired men and families of fallen ones.
He said society needs to honour them by sustaining their needs and catering to their families in terms of health, education, housing, and others.
According to him, such a gesture would motivate the present servicemen, while the retired and deceased families would have a sense of belonging in the community and recognise their loved one’s sacrifice.
He noted that the men have sacrificed their lives for the country’s unity and peaceful coexistence.
The governor lauded the security men for containing the security challenges bedevilling some parts of the country and reassured more state government support to achieve the desired goals.
Earlier, Aliyu Danchadi, the chairman of the State Council of the Nigerian Legion, commended the state government and individuals for supporting the families of fallen heroes and living war veterans. He appealed for continued donations towards improving the welfare of the legion.
The leader of the Fallen Heroes Wives Association, Maryam Yusuf, appealed for more concern from the authorities, noting that many lacked shelter, clothing and proper schooling for their children.
“We need houses, businesses and scholarships in order to live a good life and reduce the pain of losing our breadwinners,” Ms Yusuf said.
About N55 million was realised during the fundraising ceremony, while retired men and fallen heroes’ families received free healthcare services.
The wreath-laying ceremony featured a military parade, the symbolic release of pigeons and the placement of wreaths for peace and honour for fallen heroes.
The event was attended by Sokoto State Deputy Governor Idris Gobir; Speaker, Sokoto State House of Assembly, Tukur Bondinga; Police Commissioner Ali Kaigama; and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Godwin Mutkut.
Others were representatives of the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, Galadiman Gari, Aminu Attahiru, heads of the departments of State Security Services, the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and others.
