Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has paid the registration fees of 1,740 newly admitted students at the state-owned Saadatu Rimi University of Education, Kumbosto.

Mr Yusuf spoke on Saturday during the institution’s maiden matriculation.

In 2023, the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved the upgrade of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education in Kumbotso, Kano State, to a university of education.

He said the state government was fully committed to supporting students’ education needs regardless of their political affiliation.

He said the state government has also allocated 30 per cent of its 2024 budget to education, a significant increase from previous years.

The state Commissioner for Higher Education, Ibrahim Kofarmata, explained that the state government has waived 50 per cent of school fees for state secondary and tertiary institutions to make education more accessible to vulnerable children.

The vice chancellor of the university, Yahaya Isa Bunkure, commended Mr Yusuf’s dedication to education and highlighted the university’s achievements, including staff development programmes, research initiatives, and infrastructure upgrades.

Mr Bunkure encouraged the matriculating students to approach their studies with diligence and determination, recognising the significance of their time at the university.

Mr Bunkure also received a fellowship award from the Nigerian Institute of Physics (FNIP) for his contributions to the field of Physics and his commitment to research and education.
