Governor Babagana Zulum says 6,000 families displaced by insurgency in Dikwa and Mafa LGAs have been resettled.

Mr Zulum disclosed this on Monday during a visit to Muna IDP camp in Maiduguri, one of the largest in the state, with over 11,000 families.

He said the resettlement exercise was necessary due to the rise in illicit activities within the camp.

Mr Zulum cited increasing incidents of prostitution, gangsterism, child abuse and other crimes within the camp, saying such conditions undermined efforts at restoring normalcy.

“Boko Haram can never be eradicated without resettlement. People have to go back to their homes and earn their livelihood,” he said.

The governor said each of the 6,000 families would receive food items, shelter materials, and access to healthcare services.

“Additionally, each male and female head of households would receive N100,000, while housewives would be given N50,000,” he said.

In another development, Mr Zulum announced plans to upgrade the vocational and skill acquisition centre at the Maiduguri Maximum Security Correctional Facility.

The Borno governor announced this during a visit to the facility on Monday as part of efforts to enhance inmates’ rehabilitation and reduce the number of repeat offenders.

”I am here to examine the living conditions of the inmates here, especially in the areas of technical and vocational skills. The essence of keeping them at the correctional facility is largely to reform them, but this cannot be feasible without facilities on the ground.

”We can also examine cases of some inmates, and within the ambit of the law, we will look at the possibility of releasing those convicted of minor offences,” Mr Zulum said.

The governor said that improving access to technical and vocational training was essential to giving inmates a second chance and supporting their reintegration into society.

He also pledged the government’s support to improve the overall living conditions within the facility.
