Governorship Election: NGO deploys 20 observers in Ondo LGAs
TAF Africa, an NGO, says it has deployed 20 trained observers to polling units across the 18 LGAs in Ondo for Saturday’s governorship election.
Jake Epelle, CEO and founder of TAF Africa said this on Friday in Akure during a pre-election conference.
TAF Africa is an NGO which champions the inclusion of persons with disabilities in elections.
Mr Epelle said the deployment was to ensure the active participation of all eligible voters, especially PWDs.
He also said the deployment was poised to ensure PWDs participated equally and freely in the 2024 governorship election.
Mr Epelle said, “TAF Africa will deploy 20 stationary observers to polling units in each local government area with the highest numbers of registered persons with disabilities.
“In addition, five roving media observers will be assigned to monitor and document INEC’s provision of assistive devices such as Braille ballot guides for the blind.”
He added, “Other devices to be provided include magnifying glasses for persons with albinism, large font posters for the deaf (Form EC 30 PWD), and priority voting for persons with disabilities.
“We will provide periodic updates based on observations and findings from the field.”
Mr Epelle also called for PWD inclusion in elections and said their successful participation in the Ondo governorship election would set a positive precedent for future elections.
He also said it would move Nigeria closer to achieving a fully inclusive democracy.
Mr Epelle called on INEC, security agencies and anti-corruption bodies to take decisive action to prevent and penalise the use of financial inducement in the electoral process.
He stated, “For an election to be fair and unbiased, it is essential to make sure that voters are not unduly swayed. Security agencies should strengthen their presence in identified flashpoints to prevent violence, maintain order and provide security escorts for PWDs where necessary to ensure their safe access to polling units.
“Political parties should establish frameworks to support PWD candidates to counter challenges, especially last-minute pressures that may compel them to withdraw. PWD support is crucial to sustaining the gains of inclusivity and ensuring representative governance.”
