Governorship Election: Osun thugs attack journalists with axes, cutlasses

Gboyega Famodun, APC chairman in Osun, has condemned Monday’s attack on journalists by some suspected political thugs.
In a statement on Tuesday, Mr Famodun commiserated with the journalists and members attacked when the party’s governorship campaign train visited Gbongan in Aiyedaade local government.
The chairman described the attack as “wicked, uncivilised, crude, callous, shocking, inhuman and against the tenets of democracy.”
“I cannot fathom the reason for the attack,” he said. Mr Famodun added that the attack was carried out by opponents afraid of defeat in the forthcoming governorship election.
Mr Famodun further stated that physical and verbal attacks would not prevent Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s victory in his re-election bid on July 16.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists’ bus, with journalists in it, was attacked by suspected political thugs while leaving the venue of the governorship campaign in Gbongan.
The attackers, armed with cutlasses, cudgels, axes, stones and other weapons, attacked APC members’ vehicles, leaving many injured.
Wounded journalists were taken to a private hospital in the Ogo-Oluwa Area of Osogbo for treatment after they returned to the state capital.
