A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has called on leaders and people of Benue State to embrace peace, reconciliation and a new beginning for sustainable development.

Mr Gowon, who was the chairman of the occasion, made the call on Saturday in Makurdi during the celebration marking the 50th anniversary of Benue’s creation.

He commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for inviting him as the special guest of honour, describing the invitation as a privilege that rekindled memories of his long relationship with the people of the state.

The former head of state recalled his role in the creation of the former Benue-Plateau State in 1967 and the subsequent creation of Benue State in 1976, saying he had maintained close personal and official ties with many distinguished sons and daughters of the state.

“I am delighted to be back home. Benue has always made me feel at home, and I am proud to say so publicly,” he said.

Mr Gowon described the anniversary as an opportunity not only to celebrate the state’s achievements over the past five decades but also to reflect on its comparative advantages and prospects.

He praised Benue’s rich human resources, highlighting the contributions of prominent indigenes who had served Nigeria in various capacities, including the late J.S. Tarka, former Senate President David Mark, former governors, senior military officers, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

According to him, Benue’s reputation as the “Food Basket of the Nation” and one of Nigeria’s green belts places it in a strategic position for agricultural growth and economic diversification.

He said the state’s abundant agricultural resources, coupled with research and innovation, could transform Benue into a leading centre for value-added agricultural production.

The elder statesman, however, expressed concern over the recurring resource-based conflicts and insecurity in parts of the state, describing the crises as unfortunate and man-made.

He expressed optimism that the support of President Bola Tinubu, the leadership of Mr Alia, traditional rulers, political leaders, and other stakeholders would help restore lasting peace.

Mr Gowon urged leaders across ethnic and political divides to foster inclusiveness, fairness and mutual respect, adding that enduring peace could only be achieved through dialogue and collective commitment.

He called on the people of the state to adopt the golden jubilee as “a new beginning” anchored on peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity.

“With a general sense of fairness, inclusivity and mutual respect, regardless of ideological or personal differences, it is possible to resolve today that Benue at 50 marks a new beginning for our state,” he said.

Mr Gowon congratulated the government and people of Benue on the milestone and wished the state greater peace, unity and development in the years ahead.
