Gunmen kill police inspector at checkpoint, other officers injured

The Gazette learnt that the deceased’s remains have been evacuated to a morgue for autopsy.

Unknown gunmen Sunday night attacked police officers at a checkpoint in Port Harcourt, killing an inspector and other officers fatally wounded.

Confirming the incident to Peoples Gazette, police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni said the unfortunate incident happened while personnel from the Borokiri Division were on duty at the Captain Amangala Junction in Borikiri, in the Port Harcourt metropolis.

The Gazette learnt that the Captain Amangala Junction is less than a five minutes drive to the Borokiri police station.

Mr. Omoni said the gunmen numbering about 17 surprisingly attacked the police personnel on duty which led to the death of the inspector, while other officers sustained gunshot injury.

Police patrol vehicle was also perforated with bullets.

The Gazette learnt the deceased body has been evacuated and deposited in the morgue for autopsy.

Mr. Omoni l disclosed that the state police commissioner, Joseph Mukan, has ordered expanded manhunt of the perpetrators, with an order to tactical units to identify and apprehend culprits without delay.

He said the area is currently on surveillance and further details will be revealed
