Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has urged 95 intending pilgrims to Saudi Arabia to be good ambassadors of the state and Nigeria.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Dr Patrick Ebojele, on Sunday in Benin City, said the governor made the call at a farewell ceremony for the intending pilgrims.

According to the statement, the governor was represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor.

Mr Okpebholo said his administration remained committed to supporting the Muslim community and ensuring the welfare of pilgrims during hajj.

The governor noted that his inclusive style of governance had strengthened the relationship between his administration and the Muslim community in the state.

He commended the conduct of Edo pilgrims during previous hajj, noting that the state’s camp in Saudi Arabia had become a reference point for other states because of its welfare standards and feeding arrangements.

The governor added that pilgrims and officials from other states praised the Edo State camp’s hospitality, particularly the provision of African delicacies, which are rarely available hajj.

He also acknowledged challenges encountered during pilgrimage preparations and the inability of many registered pilgrims to complete their travel processes on time.

Mr Okpebholo attributed the development to late preparations by intending pilgrims, describing it as a nationwide challenge.

He assured that the state government was engaging relevant federal authorities to improve coordination in future exercises.

The governor urged the pilgrims to obey the laws of Saudi Arabia and avoid actions that could tarnish
the image of Edo and Nigeria.

“We must conduct ourselves properly and avoid actions that bring shame to Edo and Nigeria,” he said.

He further advised the pilgrims to remain united throughout the pilgrimage and avoid separating from their designated groups.

The Amirul Hajj, Ali Sulayman, urged the pilgrims to reciprocate the government’s support with exemplary conduct in the holy land.

“The only way to show gratitude for the support that the government has given is to be of good conduct and serve as worthy ambassadors of the state,” he said.

The Chairman of the Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Muhammad Uduimoh, said that 351 people registered for the pilgrimage, but only 95 would participate in the exercise. 

According to him, the contingent comprises 45 females and 50 males, including officials.

Mr Uduimoh, however, appealed to the state government to assist the board with mobility and operational support, noting that officials often relied on personal vehicles for assignments.

He also decried the absence of an ambulance and official vehicles for Edo State pilgrims in the holy land.

“Anytime we have a need, we rely on neighbouring states,” he said, calling for government intervention.
