Herbalist docked over N20.5 million fraud to provide spiritual assistance

An Iyaganku Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ibadan on Thursday granted a 29-year-old herbalist, Ganiyu Rilwan, bail of N10 million for alleged fraud of N20.5 million.
The defendant, a resident of Muslim area in Ibadan, was arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, N20.5 million fraud and conversion.
Mr Rilwan, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Chief Magistrate S.H. Adebisi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N10 million, and ordered him to produce two sureties in like sum.
Mr Adebisi, thereafter, adjourned the matter till October 27, for hearing.
The prosecution counsel, Opeyemi Olagunju, had told the court that the defendant conspired with others to obtain money by false pretence and stealing.
Mr Olagunju, a police inspector, said Mr Rilwan between November 2021 and April 2022, with intent to defraud, allegedly obtained the sum of N20.5 million from Abeeb Adejumo under the pretence of giving him spiritual assistance knowing the same to be false.
He added that the defendant allegedly stole the money from Mr Adejumo and fraudulently converted it to his own use.
Mr Olagunju said the offence is contrary to Section 383 and punishable under section 390(9), 419 and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
