Humanitarians deliver food to communities affected by hostilities in Tigray

The United Nations said humanitarian partners delivered food on Thursday to residents of communities affected by recent hostilities in the Tigray region of Northern Ethiopia.
The UN, in a statement on Friday in New York, United States, said humanitarian partners will soon deliver additional supplies to replenish stocks lost to looting.
It said, “Humanitarian partners in Ethiopia report some modest but positive developments on the delivery of humanitarian assistance in the Tigray region.
“Yesterday, they distributed food to communities affected by recent hostilities. Cash assistance through electronic transfers has also resumed following the restoration of banking services.
“Humanitarian partners are preparing to send and pre-position additional supplies to strengthen the response and replenish stocks lost to looting.”
Noting that conflicts, looting, and cash shortages, among others, are still hampering relief efforts, the UN called for more humanitarian efforts to help victims in the troubled community.
It said, “Despite this progress, significant challenges remain. Insecurity along conflict front lines, the risk of looting, cash shortages, and continued uncertainty over access are hampering relief efforts.
“The UN calls once again to allow rapid, safe, unhindered and sustained humanitarian access to all those in need across northern Ethiopia.”
The humanitarian efforts became imperative, following fighting that broke out in the region two weeks ago after months of tension between the government and the party controlling Tigray, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, who have blamed each other for violating a 2022 deal that ended a two-year civil war.
