Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a yet-to-be identified man for allegedly beating his wife, who is still nursing a four-day-old baby, until she became unconscious.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, in a statement on Friday, said the brutally assaulted victim is undergoing medical treatment.

The agency appreciated Nigerians for bringing the incident to its attention, following the viral video of the incident, noting that the suspect was in police custody.

Stressing the state government’s zero tolerance for domestic and sexual violence, the Lagos DSVA promised to share more updates as the case progresses.

The agency tagged the statement with a video of the arrest of the suspect shared by an X user who, according to the caption, said the wife was assaulted in the presence of their four-day-old baby and his mother-in-law.

“News just got to me that this man brutally assaulted his wife, who just gave birth four days ago. He beat her until she passed out and is in critical condition, currently receiving emergency medical attention at the hospital. He beat her in front of his mother-in-law and baby,” the post read.

The suspect, during interrogation, confirmed he and his wife had an issue and that she was rushed to the hospital, but failed to answer whether he beat her or not.

However, another voice in the video could be heard saying, “She (victim) is on oxygen right now, she can’t breathe.”
