A housewife, Mulikat Abdulrasheed, on Friday, prayed for divorce in an area court in Ilorin, on grounds that her husband, Abdullahi, was jobless and had no source of livelihood.

Ms Abdulrasheed said the marriage was arranged by her uncle, noting she was unaware of Mr Abdullahi’s “joblessness” and lack of any source of livelihood.

“My uncle arranged the marriage with Abdullahi. I didn’t know that he was jobless, had no money, or had any source of livelihood.

“I later realised that he had no money after giving birth to my firstborn. I told my mother I couldn’t continue living with him, but she begged me to be patient and persevere.

“I persevered and gave birth to three children for him. I cannot remain in the marriage. The situation is unbearable. I have been responsible for taking care of the children and providing their needs,” she said.

The presiding judge, Toyin Aluko, while delivering judgment in the case, said Mr Abdullahi sent a letter through the court bailiff, accepting the divorce application.

Mr Aluko thereby dissolved the marriage and ordered the petitioner to observe the one-month Iddah (waiting) period before she can remarry.

He ordered that a copy of the judgment should be served on Mr Abdullahi.
