Peter Obi of the Labour Party says he must be Nigeria’s president someday, vowing not to run away from the country.

“Anyone who thinks I’m on transit is wasting his time,” Mr Obi said. “Let me tell you, I must be the president of this country. I’m sure of that. If it is not today, it must be tomorrow.”

Mr Obi, on Friday in Akwa, Anambra State capital, made this statement at the presentation of “Peter Obi: Many voices, one Perspectives,” a book written to raise funds for Mr Obi’s presidential election petition.

Speaking further, Mr Obi said “we will not leave Nigeria. I am not in a hurry to become the president, but I know it must happen.

“For three years I was in court in Anambra to reclaim my governorship, just to challenge the process. Many people tried to discourage me, but I said even if the entire four year tenure elapsed for us to prove a point and correct the process, I will be fulfilled,” he added.

Mr Obi came third in the February 25 presidential election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on March 1 declared Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress winner of the presidential election.

Mr Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, winning 12 of 36 states of Nigeria.

Mr Abubakar polled 6,984,520 votes to come second, while Peter Obi of Labour Party, came third, polling 6,101,533 votes.

However, Mr Tinubu’s victory was rejected by the duo of Mr Abubakar and Mr Obi, who have filed petitions before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.
