A Mapo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday sentenced a 20-year-old burglar, Sadeeq Adeosun, to two years imprisonment for stealing 32 plastic tables, 100 textbooks and other school property.

Delivering judgment, the Magistrate, O.O. Latunji, stated that she convicted Adeosun based on his plea of guilty and the evidence tendered against him by the prosecution.

In a summary trial, Ms Latunji said that there was no need for further evidence since Adeosun had confessed to the crime.

She noted that the judgment took cognizance of the fact that the convict was a first-time offender.

“Adeosun is hereby sentenced to two years imprisonment or an option of N50,000 for the offence,” Latunji said.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Oluseye Akinola, had told the court that the convict committed the crime on January 12, at about 7.00 a.m., at the premises of Nurul Islamia Secondary School, Sanyo area, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Akinola added that a member of the community whose name was not given had sighted Adeosun damaging plastic tables, removing their legs and arranging them for movement.

According to the prosecutor, after the police arrested the convict, he confessed that it was the fourth time he would be coming to steal plastic tables, chairs, textbooks and other school property in Nurul Islamia Grammar school.

He said that Adeosun had successfully damaged 32 plastic tables and chairs with the intention of stealing their legs for sale.

The prosecutor also stated that the convict was apprehended with 100 different textbooks and many mobile phones that were confiscated from students and kept in an office.

“In fact, the school authorities told the police that that they’ve long discovered that school property were being stolen, but they did not know how.

“Notable among the missing property is a drum given to the school by the government to carry out domestic activities,” he said.

Akinola noted that offence contravened the provision of section 390 (9) of the criminal code cap 38 vol. ii law of Oyo State 2000.
