Ibikunle Amosun’s supporters dump APC, declare support for PDP in Ogun

The Senator Ibikunle Amosun movement in Abeokuta South, Ogun State, has dumped the All Progressives Congress for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The SIA movement’s leader in Abeokuta, Moshood Okanlawon Akinleye, popularly known as Americo, announced the development on Wednesday.
He added that members of the group endorsed the PDP candidates and would ensure their victory during the 2027 general elections.
The state candidates include Iyabo Obasanjo vying to represent Ogun Central at the Senate; Toyin Amuzu eyeing Abeokuta South federal constituency at the House of Representatives; Olufunbi Majekodunmi for Abeokuta South Constituency I at the House of Assembly; and Adeoye Adeniran for Abeokuta South Constituency II, at the House of Assembly.
The state PDP governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu’s name was ommited in the 2027 candidates list released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He has, however, urged his supporters to remain calm.
The SIA movement’s leader in Abeokuta, Moshood Okanlawon Akinleye, popularly known as Americo, who announced the decision, described the movement’s experience in the APC as disappointing, and declared the PDP as their political home.
Mr Akinleye said the ruling party in the state lacked direction and failed to provide purposeful leadership to meet the aspirations of ordinary citizens.
He also likened the party to a cult, and criticised its approach to governance and policies which he said failed to address the concerns of the people.
He said the movement’s decision to defect to the PDP followed a reassessment of its political experience and a determination to support a party that can deliver better leadership and representation.
He also assured that the movement would mobilise its members and supporters across Abeokuta South to work for the victory of the PDP candidates in 2027.
He stressed that members of the movement were prepared to work towards the emergence of the candidates at the polls, contribute to the formation of a government that prioritises the welfare of the people.
He also noted that the SIA members would not support candidates outside the PDP in the forthcoming elections.
Mr Akinleye described the group’s return to the PDP as a fresh beginning, and expressed confidence that its candidates would provide the quality of leadership and representation expected by residents of Abeokuta South.
The Ogun APC chairman, Yemi Sanusi, had yet to respond to calls and messages from the Peoples Gazette on Wednesday, seeking comment on the development, as of the time this report was filed.
