ICPC boss tasks lawyers on integrity, professional excellence

Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Musa Aliyu, has urged lawyers across the country to uphold integrity, truth and consistency in their professional conduct.
The ICPC spokesperson, Demola Bakare, said this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
Mr Aliyu made the call when Owhor Clever, the chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gwagwalada branch, Federal Capital Territory, and his executive visited the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The ICPC chairman, who emphasised the critical role of mentorship in shaping the next generation of lawyers, stressed the need to set a positive precedent for the legal profession.
“It is important that young lawyers begin their careers under the guidance of seniors who possess unquestionable integrity.
“As senior practitioners, we must lead by example and ensure that what we pass on can stand the test of time,” he said.
Mr Aliyu cautioned against behaviours that could tarnish the image of the legal profession, urging lawyers to remain consistent in their positions on judicial matters to avoid eroding public trust.
“If you argue today that white is white, tomorrow you should not argue that white is green or black. The public watches us closely, and inconsistency undermines the profession,” he warned.
Mr Aliyu also assured the NBA Gwagwalada branch of the commission’s readiness to partner with them in the proposed initiatives and other areas of mutual interest.
Earlier in his remarks, Mr Clever stated that the visit was aimed at exploring collaboration with the ICPC in areas such as anti-corruption and integrity training for members, and contributing articles to NBA journals.
The chairman said that it was also to seek the commission’s partnership on the branch’s Legal Week and other programmes.
Mr Clever also announced plans to dedicate the next edition of the branch’s journal to honour Mr Aliyu for his contributions to the fight against corruption.
He, therefore, presented the ICPC chairman with an award of excellence in recognition of his leadership achievements.
