The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has sought the collaboration of Sokoto State House of Assembly to effectively discharge its mandate of anti-corruption fight.

The ICPC Resident Commissioner in-charge of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states, Garba Tukur-Idris, made the call during a courtesy visit to the state house of assembly on Tuesday in Sokoto.

Mr Tukur-Idris described the legislative arm as an important segment in strengthening transparency and accountability in governance.

He said, “There is no nation that can progress where corruption thrives and no single arm of government or tier of government or agency that can fight corruption alone. We need to come together to effectively fight corruption through strengthening the systems and educate citizens to imbibe the habit of doing the right thing in the right direction.’’

He identified collaboration and partnership as the cornerstone towards a successful fight against corruption in the country.

The commissioner explained that ICPC mandates include enforcement, prevention and education through receiving petitions, prosecution, checkmating system and public awareness.

Responding, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Alhaji Kabiru Ibrahim (APC-Kware), appreciated the ICPC for the visit, assuring that it would surely strengthen the relationship amongst them.

Mr Ibrahim expressed the readiness of SSHA to work with ICPC, saying that the house has committees on public accounts, public complaints and judiciary among others.

He further stated that the house also ensured open doors for public petitions, undertaking oversight functions of all projects as well as appropriation to ensure check and balance.

The visit was attended by lawmakers, Clerk of House, Dr Al-Mustapha Sidi-Attahiru and ICPC officials among others.
