A Nigerian man identified as Benjamin has been arrested in India after Chandigarh police recovered 274 grams of heroin from him.

The Hindustan Times reported that the 25-year-old Nigerian was arrested at a check post in Industrial Area, Phase-2, on Thursday by the Operations Cell under the supervision of DSP Jasbir Singh.

Police said the team was on patrolling duty when they spotted the suspect.

He was then charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the sector-31 police station and presented before a court on Friday.

Mr Benjamin will remain in police custody till August 16, and security officials will question him regarding the source and destination of the drugs and others involved.

The police said Mr Benjamin resided in Tilak Nagar, Delhi and had come to India on a business visa in December 2020.

Mr Benjamin’s arrest came weeks after two Nigerians were arrested over drug possession.

In July, the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Pune Police arrested two Nigerians and confiscated 644 grams of mephedrone and 201 grams of cocaine.

The accused were identified as Ogochukwu Emmanuel and Enebeli Omamma Vivian.
