INEC offices torched in Ebonyi

Two offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ebonyi State were burnt down late Tuesday by unidentified persons.
INEC in a tweet on Wednesday disclosed that the offices destroyed were located at Ebonyi and Ezza North Local Government Areas.
Video footage and pictures posted by the commission on social media show the level of damage on its two offices.
INEC spokesman in Ebonyi, Cornelius Ali, told reporters in Abakaliki that the damaged valuables include generator sets, voting cubicles, and other vital materials across the two offices.
Mr Ali noted that the management is on a visit to the affected offices to ascertain the levels of destruction, saying the attacks might “jeopardise the forthcoming continuous voter registration exercise slated for June.”
State police spokesperson Loveth Odah abruptly ended the call when People’s Gazette sought comments for this story. Ms Odah said “I am busy.”
Attacks on INEC offices across the South-East have become commonplace of recent. Two days ago, the commission’s office in Enugu was set ablaze by unidentified persons, The Gazette reported.
Last week, another office was gutted by fire. The police command in Enugu claimed a power surge caused the fire outbreak at the INEC Obollo-Afor office.Â
The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia state was among other offices set alight.
Following the attack on one of its Abia offices, the commission announced that it will convene an emergency meeting to address attacks on its facilities in some parts of the country. The Gazette could not immediately confirm the outcome of the meeting.
