The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is prepared to conduct the by-elections on Saturday in Cross River.

INEC spokesperson in Cross River, Tonia Nwobi, stated this in an interview in Calabar on Tuesday.

Mr Nwobi said the elections, which would be conducted in two state constituencies and one federal constituency, would be held in 34 polling units in four LGAs.

She explained that the elections would take place in eight polling units in the Akamkpa council area, 11 polling units in Biase, two in Obanliku and 13 in the Yala LGA.

She added that logistics and security had been put in place to ensure free, fair and credible exercise.

According to her, at least 100,000 voters will participate in the exercise, and we are using INEC staff and not ad hoc staff for the by-elections.

She stated, “Logistics have been fully mobilised for the exercise. Non-sensitive materials have been distributed while we await the sensitive ones to be brought to the CBN for onward distribution to the various polling units.

“For security, the Inter-Agency Security Committee on Election Security have already met twice and strategised on how to ensure there is no security lapse on election day.”

The by-elections were scheduled following the judgment of the Court of Appeal.
