Initiative lauds Senate for advancing nationwide toll-free emergency number

The Ladies Empowerment Goals and Support Initiative has praised the Senate for passing, at second reading, the bill to establish a unified toll-free emergency number, calling it a major step for public safety.
In a statement on Friday in Kaduna, Jeffrey Umogbai, communications advisor, LEGASI, said the action strengthened Nigeria’s emergency response system and supports long-standing efforts toward a harmonised emergency number.
The organisation, which promotes community safety and civil–military cooperation, said the progress aligned with its advocacy for a simplified, accessible, and reliable national emergency communication system for all Nigerians.
Mr Umogbai recalled that since 2023, LEGASI had led consultations and engagements across Kaduna and Plateau, pushing for the revitalisation of the country’s emergency communication structure and adoption of a unified three-digit code.
He said that the current reliance on multiple, hard-to-remember 11-digit hotlines had left many citizens confused and unable to reach help promptly during emergencies.
Mr Umogbai reiterated that adopting a single toll-free number, particularly the revitalised and functional 112, aligns with global best practices and would reduce response times, save lives, and improve coordination among first responders.
He restated the organisation’s commitment to supporting the National Assembly, security agencies, and other stakeholders through public sensitisation, research insights, and technical guidance as the bill moves toward third reading and final passage.
