Insecurity: Akwa Ibom imposes curfew on motorcycles, tricycles

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has restricted the movement of motorcycles (Okada) and tricycles (Keke) in Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

The restriction was announced in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Emmanuel Ekuwem, in Uyo on Friday.

The government said for Ikot Ekpene federal constituency comprising Ikot Ekpene, Essien Udim, and Obot Akara local government areas, the tricycles and motorcycles would not operate 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. daily.

Mr Ekuwem noted that the restriction became necessary because of increased crimes within the three local government areas.

He added that the crimes had led to the loss of innocent lives and property.

Mr Ekuwem explained, “The government of Akwa Ibom state has observed in recent times an increase in the frequency of criminal activities in Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency.

“In keeping with its core mandate of protecting the lives and property of our citizens and security personnel, Governor Emmanuel has directed immediate restrictions on the operations of motorcycles and tricycles in Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency, from the hours of 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. daily, with effect from Friday, March 26.

“Governor Emmanuel thankfully appreciates the service of all our law enforcement agencies and urges them to intensify their security patrol and duties, especially in the vulnerable areas in particular and the entire federal constituency in general,” Mr Ekuwem said.

He pointed out that the government regretted any inconvenience the ban might cause innocent citizens and residents of the federal constituency the residents.
