The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) on Monday called on the federal government to urgently address the rising insecurity affecting children, women, and communities across the country.

Eliana Martins, country vice-president and national president of FIDA Nigeria, spoke in an interview with journalists on the sidelines of FIDA’s press briefing to kickstart its 2025 annual general conference, which begins on November 25 and ends on November 27.

The theme of the year’s conference is “Bridging Gaps, Building Futures: Women’s Rights, Justice, and Sustainable Development in Nigeria.”

Ms Martins described the current security situation as sad and unacceptable, noting that schools, which should serve as safe spaces for learning and development, have become vulnerable to attacks.

She said children deserved protection, and the government must prioritise their safety.

According to her, shutting down schools is not a sustainable solution, as many children are still targeted in their homes, farms, and communities.

She said, “When even homes are not secure, keeping children out of school does not solve the problem.

“Government must act proactively and fulfil its constitutional duty of safeguarding lives. FIDA is really concerned about the recurring attacks and the slow pace of justice for victims.

“We urge authorities to demonstrate political will in implementing laws, prosecuting offenders, and ensuring that banditry is decisively addressed.”

Ms Martins also reaffirmed FIDA’s support for reserved seats for women, saying their inclusion in governance was necessary for balanced development.

She said that women, who make up the majority of the population, must be represented at decision-making tables to contribute practical, community-focused solutions.

Ms Martins emphasised the need to enforce the 35 per cent affirmative action already recognised by the courts.

According to her, women have capacity and competence, and Nigeria cannot achieve meaningful progress while excluding hardworking, committed, and capable women.

She further urged women to participate actively in politics, register at party levels, and take advantage of opportunities for leadership.

“FIDA has mobilised communities, built partnerships, and driven advocacy aimed at strengthening women’s participation in governance and ensuring fairness in representation,” she said.
