Iranian and Omani authorities have reached a deal to open a safe route for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, said on Wednesday that authorities in Iran and Oman were working on a joint statement to announce the agreement.

“Provided that certain third parties do not obstruct the process, a joint statement by the two countries outlining the main considerations and points agreed upon is also being reviewed and finalized,” Mr Baghaei said.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson said the joint statement to be released by the countries will detail the technical, legal, security and environmental modalities of the deal.

However, referring to the U.S. as a “third party”, Mr Baghaei said the agreement between Iran and Oman alone would not guarantee safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz if “the U.S. naval blockade and other actions against Iran and its interests remain in place”.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday that the United States and Iran could reach a deal to open the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping on Wednesday.

The shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz due to attacks between the U.S. and Iran for over five months has caused major disruption in global oil and other related trade.
