Ireti Kingibe, Wike’s showdown festers as Senate summons FCT minister, orders stoppage of demolitions
The Senate has launched an investigation into the recent controversial demolition of buildings in the Federal Capital Territory.
The senate, during plenary on Thursday, also inaugurated a committee to conduct the investigation into the matter.
The lawmakers therefore ordered the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to stop further demolitions in the metropolis until further notice.
It also summoned Mr Wike to appear at the Senate to explain why occupants of the affected houses were being rendered homeless.
The directive was given following a resolution arrived at following a motion moved by Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing FCT Senatorial District, to stop further illegal demolitions by Mr Wike.
The legislators at the red chamber thereafter initiated the inauguration of the committee which had been asked to report its findings within a given time.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while reading the motion however clarified that the directive to Mr Wike didn’t affect buildings currently being heard in court.
The commencement of investigations by the Senate followed Mr Wike’s latest revocation of land at Life Camp in Abuja, leaving residents to cry out for help, as they insisted that they had the legal documents to the land.
Hostilities between the pair started after Mr Wike’s appointment as FCT minister in August 2023. Mrs Kingibe accused the former Rivers State governor of not wanting to associate with her despite being the representative of the metropolis.
Mr Wike, challenged her performance as a lawmaker, insisted he didn’t want to be her friend, and advised her to go “hang on a transformer.” He also threatened to ensure she was not re-elected in 2027.
