Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni condemns violence against Nigerian Christians
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has condemned violence against Christian communities in Nigeria and charged the Nigerian government to prosecute those behind attacks targeted at Christians.
In a statement on Friday, Ms Meloni condemned the attacks on Christians, adding that religious freedom is an inalienable right.
“We strongly condemn the renewed violence against Christian communities in Nigeria today. Religious freedom is an inalienable right: we call on the Nigerian government to strengthen the protection of Christian communities and all religious communities and prosecute those responsible for this heinous attack,” Ms Meloni said.
The Italian Prime Minister added, “Italy expresses its closeness to the victims and communities in Nigeria that today feel in danger because of their religious beliefs.”
Ms Meloni’s comments come amid global outrage over alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria, a narrative the President Bola Tinubu government has vehemently opposed.
The campaign against the alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria, championed by some American lawmakers, including Ted Cruz, Riley Moore, Nancy Mace and others, has seen President Donald Trump redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern.
