Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has been named in the Football Black List 2025 in recognition of the player’s outstanding off-field contribution to the game through his Project 17.

Iwobi founded Project 17 in 2021 and has become an avenue to create opportunities for underrepresented Black youth through football clinics, education workshops, mentorship programmes, and competitions.

The 29-year-old was recognised alongside Arsenal star Eberechi Eze for dedication to empowering South London’s youth through education and sport courtesy of his foundation.

Three Lionesses defender Jess Carter was also included in the honour list for being “a powerful advocate for cultural change and accountability” after she was racially targeted as England won the 2025 Women’s European Championship.

Others on the list are former Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City defender Kolo Toure, ex-Premier League player Nathan Dyer and Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada, broadcaster Liz Ward, and Oxford United captain Naomi Bedeau.

Development co-ordinator Shakira Waithe and former BBC Sport journalist Jessica Creighton also made the list.

Established in 2008, the FBL is an annual award celebrating men and women sports personalities of African and Caribbean descents who have contributed immensely to the British game.

Speaking about the 2025’s list, co-founder of the FBL, Rodney Hinds, said “Once again, the Football Black List highlights outstanding individuals making a real impact. Congratulations to everyone recognised, as well as those nominated.

“This initiative continues to inspire many, and we are incredibly proud of what it has become. It’s about celebrating the vital role our community plays in the game. I’m looking forward to the celebration event and excited about the future of the Football Black List.”
