The Jigawa government says it will invest N4.17 billion to develop irrigation infrastructure and climate-smart agriculture. The initiative aims to boost food production and protect farmers from flood-related losses.

Sagir Musa, the commissioner for information, said in a statement on Tuesday that the State Executive Council (SEC) approved the projects. He said that the project would combine irrigation expansion, flood mitigation and climate-smart farming support.

Mr Musa said that the council approved N2.4 billion for the procurement of organic fertilisers and crop growth enhancers under the 2026 Climate-Smart Agriculture Initiative.

He said that the government would procure 30,000 sachets of Geo-Plus organic fertiliser, 20,000 sachets of Geo-Green organic fertiliser, and 100,000 litres of Topper Growth enhancer.

The commissioner said that the intervention was designed to cut input costs while improving farmer productivity and profitability.

“This approval directly addresses the economic pressures facing farmers and supports our strategy for resilient and sustainable food production,” he said.

Mr Musa said that the council also approved N1.7 billion for the procurement of 10 solar-powered de-flooding and all-in-one mobile irrigation machines.

He said that the specialised equipment would irrigate about 500 hectares of cluster farmlands and reduce irrigation costs for riverine communities.

The project, he said, would minimise flood damage to farmlands while expanding access to efficient solar-powered irrigation systems for dry-season activities.

According to Mr Musa, the initiative will support all-year-round cultivation, improve crop yields and strengthen food security by expanding access to modern irrigation technology.

“By combining flood control with solar irrigation technology, the state is investing in a climate-resilient agricultural system capable of creating jobs and expanding rural incomes,” he said.

Mr Musa said that the gesture demonstrated the Governor Umar Namadi administration’s commitment toward modernising agriculture, enhancing rural livelihoods and promoting sustainable economic growth through climate-smart farming practices.
