A new World Bank report has revealed that jobs available to most Nigerians cannot lift them out of poverty.

These findings are contained in a report released by World Bank, titled ‘Global Economic prospect’. 

“Work in farm and non-farm enterprises is very small scale and may not generate the income required to lift households out of poverty,” the report said.

The report detailed that poverty reduction has remained stagnant since 2015, with more Nigerians sliding into poverty over time.

The  bank projected that the number of poor Nigerians will rise to 95.1 million by 2022.

The report disclosed that as many as four in 10 Nigerians live below the national poverty line. 

It warned that climatic and conflict shocks, which disproportionately affect Nigeria’s poor, are growing, and that COVID-19 has exacerbated their consequences; yet, government help for households is limited.

The Washington based bank suggested that deep structural reforms guided by evidence are urgently needed to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in June claimed that his regime lifted over 10 million Nigerians out of poverty in the last two years.

In his Democracy Day speech, Mr Buhari said his government further hopes to lift 100 million citizens out of poverty over six years. The regime’s tenure expires barely two years away.
