John Brenkus, host of ESPN’s ‘Sport Science,’ dies at 54 after battling depression

American T.V. host, John Brenkus dies at 54, following a battle with depression.
Although the exact cause of his death is still unclear, a statement on Brinx TV, a company founded by the deceased, on Sunday, announced the news of his demise, reiterating his struggles with depression and suicide.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away,” the statement partly read.
It added, “John, the co-founder of Base Productions, founder of Brinx TV, and co-creator and host of the six-time Emmy Award-winning Sport Science, had been battling depression. John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31st, 2025.”
His family and friends requested privacy while encouraging anyone struggling with depression to seek help.
Brenkus had openly discussed his battle with depression in 2023 in an interview with Marcellus Riley, former professional football player, where he revealed how close he was to taking his own life before a pivotal moment, admitting to how real his struggles with the mental disorder were.
He said, “There’s something wrong with me. I am mentally lost.
“I then went through a battle, I mean, I’m telling you, a battle, to get out of it.”
Tributes have been pouring in from across the sports and media world, remembering the illustrious career of the former TV executive.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter described Brenkus as being “so good at what he did”.
Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III also shared his grief and offered “Prayers up for John Brenkus and his family”.
Brenkus was the host of Sports Science on ESPN and a six time Emmy Award winner for his contribution to sports and broadcasting.
