A civil society group in Osun, Transparency International, has urged Nigerians to uphold democratic values and ensure that the sacrifices of the nation’s past heroes were not in vain.

The group’s spokesperson, Ayo Ologun, who made the call in an interview on Friday in Osogbo, reflected on the significance of Democracy Day.

Mr Ologun said the current state of governance in the country left much to be desired, adding that the annual commemoration was a reminder of Nigeria’s democratic journey and the sacrifices made by past heroes.

He said that the country’s challenges should be addressed to make the nation’s democratic achievements more meaningful and worthy of celebration.

According to him, the nation is grappling with serious security challenges, and the government must do more to protect its citizens’ lives and property.

“June 12 remains significant because it reminds Nigerians of their democratic history, the progress achieved over the years, and the hope for a better future.

“The occasion offers an opportunity to remember the nation’s heroes, reflect on the values they stood for and renew the collective commitment to building a more just, secure and prosperous society.

“It helps to remember our heroes and the things they stood for, the need to do better and not allow the works of our heroes past to be in vain,” he said.

Mr Ologun called on leaders at all levels to demonstrate greater commitment to good governance, accountability, and the welfare of citizens.

He, however, urged Nigerians to continue playing active roles in strengthening the country’s democracy in the interest of peace, unity and national development.
