General Brice Oligui Nguema, Gabon’s military leader, has announced that he will be contesting in the presidential election scheduled for next month.

On Monday, Mr Nguema, who took power after a coup ousting his cousin Ali Bongo in 2023, declared his presidential bid before his supporters at Gabon’s capital, Libreville.

“I am a builder, and I need your courage, your strength, to build this country,” Mr Nguema said.

Mr Nguema said he decided to contest “after careful reflection and in response to your many appeals.”

Mr Nguema’s announcement comes months after a constitutional amendment paved the way for him to run in the election scheduled for April 12.

In 2023, Mr Nguema led the coup that toppled the government of Mr Bongo, ending his 55-year firm hold on power.

Mr Bongo ruled Gabon for 14 years after his father, Omar Bongo, ruled the oil-rich country for 41 years.
