Court bars INEC from deploying Amotekun for Osun governorship election

The Osogbo Division of the Federal High Court has placed a restraining order on the operatives of the Osun State Security Network, otherwise known as Amotekun Corps, from interfering in security operations during the state governorship election slated to hold on July 16, 2022.

Presiding judge Ayo Emmanuel on Thursday granted an interlocutory injunction restraining INEC from seeking the services of the security body for the governorship election. The judge also barred Amotekun from rendering its services for the same purpose.
Opposition party, PDP, had on June 29 filed a motion to prevent electoral body INEC from employing services of Amotekun for the polls.
Amotekun is run by the APC-led state government and PDP had expressed its fears that the security body is compromised to favour the ruling party in the elections.
In June, the former Deputy National Secretary of the PDP, Diran Odeyemi, accused the APC of using Amotekun operatives to disrupt the electioneering activities by attacking and killing opposition party members over fears that a defeat was imminent for the ruling party at the polls.
