COVID-19 death toll overs 2m globally

Nigeria has recorded over 105,000 cases and over 1,400 coronavirus deaths.

The number of deaths recorded across the globe due to coronavirus pandemic on Thursday surpassed 2million as countries in the world sought for vaccine to combat the virus.

Globally, more than 93.5million cases of coronavirus have been recorded, 66.8million persons have recovered from the deadly virus, while over 2million persons have been killed by the virus, Worldometer reported on Friday.

Since the pandemic broke out in 2019 in China, it has spread across 218 countries, disrupting social, political and economic life around the world, causing outrightly cancellation or postponement major sports, entertainment and political events around the world.

The first wave of coronavirus compelled a global lockdown that saw countries shutting their land, sea and air borders to curtail the spread of the virus.

The second wave of the deadly virus comes with a mutated, deadlier variant that has forced countries like UK, France to embarked on a second lockdown as the deadly virus ravages the world.

Than any other country in the world, the United States of America has recorded more cases and deaths due to coronavirus pandemic. Over 23.8million cases and over 397,000 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in the United States.

Next to the U.S. in the number of coronavirus deaths is Brazil. Brazil has recorded over 8.3million coronavirus cases and over 207,000 deaths.

In India, over 10.5million cases and over 150,000 coronavirus deaths have been recorded, while in the UK over 3.2million cases and over 86,000 coronarvirus deaths have been recorded.

In Africa, South Africa has recorded the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths. Over 1.2million cases and 35,000 deaths have been recorded in South Africa.

Morocco has recorded over 455,000 coronavirus cases and over 7,800 deaths, while Nigeria has recorded over 105,000 cases and over 1,400 coronavirus deaths.

In a bid to protect people from the deadly virus, some vaccines have been developed and are being rolled out.

Vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Spunik V and Sinopharm have all received emergency use certification from several countries after clinical trials returned over 90 percent effectiveness in stopping the virus.

The UK first commenced vaccination early December last year. Argentina also had commenced vaccination against coronavirus late December.

Belgium, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kuwait, Mexico, Malta, Poland, Russia, Singapore, United Arab Emirate and Switzerland are among countries that have commenced vaccination against coronavirus.
