An Azerbaijan national was fatally shot by rampaging pirates who commandeered a Turkish cargo ship Saturday morning in the Gulf of Guinea, off the Nigerian coast, Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

Five Koreans and a Ghanaian were reportedly taken hostage by the marauders, the state media said Monday, citing security sources.

The cargo ship, M/V Mozart, was said to be sailing to Cape Town in South Africa from Nigeria’s commercial hub Lagos, when the invasion occurred.

The Gulf of Guinea, globally touted as one of the most dangerous sea areas, has been notorious for pirate attacks in recent years.

Turkish authorities are preparing for negotiations to secure the release of the kidnapped sea men, the state media agency stated, even though the assailants have yet to make any demands.
