Sanwo-Olu down with coronavirus, test confirms

Sanwo-Olu becomes the eight governor to contract coronavirus since it broke in the country late February.

Lagos governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has tested positive for coronavirus.

Lagos health commissioner Professor Akin Abayomi, in a statement on Saturday said Sanwo-Olu is in isolation undergoing treatment for coronavirus after his test result returned positive.  

“Following Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s exposure to a confirmed case of COVID-19, a PCR test performed yesterday, the 11th of December, has confirmed that he has indeed been infected with the virus, which is supported by mild symptoms and fatigue typical of a mild case of COVID,” Mr. Abayomi said.

So far in Nigeria, 72,142 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed, 65,722 cases have been discharged, 1,190 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, according to Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC). 

Lagos State has recorded more coronavirus cases than other states in the country. Over 24,614 cases of coronavirus, 23, 316 cases have been treated and discharged while 229 persons have died due to the pandemic. 

Sanwo-Olu becomes the eight governor to have contracted coronavirus since it broke in the country in late February. 

Before now, seven other governors have tested positive and recovered from coronavirus. 

They include, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State; Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State.
