UEFA abolishes away goal rule

The Union of European Football Associations, UEFA, has outlawed the Away Goal Rule from all European competitions.
The regulation change will be implemented from the start of the 2021-22 season.
The UEFA away goal rule had been used as a method of tiebreaking in association football and other sports for more than half a century, when teams played each other twice, once at each team’s home field, before it was abolished on Thursday, following proposal for its abolishment by coaches in recent years.
The rule currently “runs opposite to its original objective,” according to UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, who believes it discourages clubs from playing attacking football.
The away goal rule states that the team with more goals at the opponent’s home stadium wins the tie. However with the new order, games that are equal on aggregate score after 90 minutes in the second leg will go straight to extra time and then to a penalty shootout.
