Ahmed Gulak, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been killed by unknown gunmen in Owerri, Imo state capital, many sources have reported.

Mr Gulak’s daughter, Muneerah, confirmed his demise on Twitter Sunday morning but did not elaborate on the circumstances leading to the incident.

Mr Gulak, a former political adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, was ambushed and shot on his way to Sam Mbakwe airport on Sunday morning, broadcaster AIT reported.

Sources said Mr Gulak was scheduled to board an 8:30 a.m. flight to Abuja after a visit to Imo before he met his death.

His death comes as unknown gunmen continue to attack security formations and public facilities in the South-South and South-East region, killing security agents and destroying stations.

Peoples Gazette on Saturday reported that unidentified gunmen razed the Atta Divisional Police Headquarters in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo. The attackers shot sporadically for more than one hour before setting the station ablaze.

In Anambra, military officers were killed by unknown gunmen in Ihiala on Saturday causing operatives to block the Onitsha Head Bridge for a stop and search. The blockade saw many commuters stranded for many hour early Saturday.

Until his death, Mr Gulak was a chieftain of the APC. He defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in February 2018 after an intractable disagreement with the PDP hierarchy who denied him his aspiration for the chairmanship of the party.

In 2018, Mr Gulak oversaw the controversial APC governorship primary election in which returned Governor Hope Uzodinma as the party’s candidate. He alleged that an aspirant vying for the party’s governorship ticket offered him a $2 million bribe at the time.
