The EduMedia Climate Reform on Health Initiative has urged the Kaduna State government and emergency response agencies to strengthen flood preparedness as persistent rainfall increases.

It said flooding in vulnerable communities is likely.

The organisation made the call in a statement signed on Thursday by its communication officer, Hadiza Abdullahi.

It urged the state government, local government councils, emergency management agencies, community leaders, civil society organisations and the media to intensify flood awareness campaigns.

According to the organisation, this will strengthen emergency preparedness, improve drainage infrastructure and ensure access to essential healthcare services.

It noted that the areas requiring heightened vigilance include Abubakar Kigo Road in Kaduna North and Barnawa in Kaduna South council areas.

Also in Karatudu, Narayi and Sabon Tasha in Chikun council area.

The statement warned that flooding could contaminate drinking water sources, increasing the risk of cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases.

It added that stagnant floodwater could create breeding grounds for mosquitoes, leading to an increase in malaria cases, while disrupted access to healthcare could worsen the condition of pregnant women and also nursing mothers, children under five, older persons and persons living with disabilities.

The organisation advised residents to clear blocked drains, avoid dumping refuse into drainage channels and relocate from flood-prone areas where necessary.

It also urged the public to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, boil or properly treat drinking water, and seek prompt medical attention if they develop symptoms of flood-related illnesses.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official weather and emergency advisories and to report flooding incidents to the appropriate authorities promptly, according to the statement.

The organisation restated that timely government intervention and collective action by residents were essential to reducing flood-related losses and protecting public health.
