Kamala Harris congratulates Trump, harps on unifying U.S.

The U.S. Vice President, Kamala Harris, has extended her congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump on his electoral victory on Wednesday.
Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign director, confirmed this in a statement.
Mr Cheung said the former president and Mrs Harris exchanged a phone call and agreed on unifying America into greatness.
“President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke by phone earlier today where she congratulated him on his historic victory. President Trump acknowledged Vice President Harris for her strength, professionalism, and tenacity throughout the campaign, and both leaders agreed on the importance of unifying the country,” the statement read.
In her speech following the announcement of the results, Mrs Harris said she was proud of the race and promised a peaceful handover of power.
“We must accept the results of this election. While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign. The fight for freedom, opportunity, fairness, and the dignity of all people, for the ideals at the heart of our nation, the ideals that reflect America at its best,” the vice president noted.
Mr Trump was elected as the 47th U.S. President, having cleared the 270 electoral votes to defeat his closest rival, Mrs Harris.
Several world leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have congratulated the former president, stressing collaboration between countries in the interest of development.
