The Kano State House of Assembly has recommended the revocation or comprehensive upgrade of the five-kilometre road contract in Gabasawa LGA.

The recommendation followed the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation on the recent flood disaster in the Zakirai Community area.

Presenting the report during the plenary session on Monday, the committee chairman, Sule Shuwaki, said the contractor should be directed to expand the drainage system in the affected area to prevent future flooding.

The committee also urged the Kano government to provide urgent relief materials to the flood victims and deploy experts from the ministries of works and environment to conduct a technical assessment of the site.

Following extensive deliberations on the report, lawmakers unanimously adopted the recommendation and called for immediate government intervention to mitigate the flood’s impact.

In a separate motion, the house also urged the Kano government to reconstruct the road linking Kwanar ‘Yan Mota, Kwanar Bakin Zuwo, Jakara, and Kwanar Gabari in Kano Municipal LGA.

The motion, moved by Aliyu Yusuf Daneji, noted that the road, especially the portion around Kasuwar Kurmi Market, was in a deplorable state and impeded movement and commercial activities.

Meanwhile, Abdullahi Yahaya also moved a motion during the plenary session calling on the government to asphalt the road from Jogana to Matallawa, Yamadi Charo, and Daraudau.

Mr Yahaya said that the road usually turns impassable during the rainy season, compelling residents to fill potholes with sand and wood as a temporary measure.

The motion was seconded by the majority whip, Zakariyya Nuhu, and received the full support of the house.

Other motions adopted included the construction of the Dalawada–Gazobi Road in Tudun Wada LGA and the reconstruction of the Fanisau-Ungogo Road.
