The Kano State government has signed N21.29 billion contracts to rehabilitate the Tamburawa and Challawa water treatment plants and enhance access to portable water in the state.

Dr Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim, acting Commissioner for Water Resources, said this at the signing of the contract agreements on Thursday in Kano.

Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf had earlier approved N21.29 billion for the comprehensive rehabilitation of key water facilities to revitalise the state’s water distribution network and address longstanding infrastructure challenges.

Mr Muhammad-Hashim said the contracts were awarded to two Chinese construction companies: CGC and CCECC Nigeria Limited, respectively.

He said the first project for the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa water treatment plant and the restoration of the raw water pump station, valued at N9.9 billion, was awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited.

The commissioner said that rehabilitation of the Challawa raw water pump station and water treatment plant, alongside the restoration of the Goron Dutse reservoirs, awarded to the CCECC Nigeria Ltd, would cost N11.39 billion.

Mr Muhammad-Hashim underscored the importance of timely delivery and urged the contractors to ensure the projects are completed within the eight-month time frame.

He expressed confidence in the companies’ technical competence and capacity to execute the projects in accordance with the contract specifications.

“The rehabilitation of the two strategic water treatment plants represents a historic and major step in the administration’s broader efforts to revive critical public infrastructure, strengthen water production, improve distribution systems and access to potable water for residents of the state,” he said.

According to Mr Muhammad-Hashim, the projects will significantly enhance the efficiency and sustainability of water supply services in Kano metropolis and its environs.
