Kano govt moves to promote good menstrual hygiene practices

The Kano State Ministry of Health has established a special unit to promote the health and well-being of adolescent girls and menstrual hygiene management.
The health commissioner, Abubakar Labaran, said this on Monday at a media interactive session as part of activities to mark the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
The World Menstrual Hygiene Day, designated by the United Nations, is observed annually on May 28.
Mr Labaran said the day is dedicated to creating awareness among women and girls on proper menstrual hygiene practices.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the health of women and children in Kano.
The commissioner lamented that many girls experience stigma, fear and emotional distress during their menstrual periods.
To address this issue, Mr Labaran said the ministry was collaborating with non-governmental organisations, school authorities, and other stakeholders to educate girls on safe and healthy menstrual practices.
